Embed Video We all know that Google can’t "read" or "see" content within videos, so there’s no way to gain search engine rankings from video, Right? Or is there…

Anyone who uses Google Analytics knows that Google measures the "Avg Time on Site" , so when a visitor comes to your page, Google tracks how long the visitor stays on that page. So let’s assume you have a site about "baby gifts". And, you have a page ranked #10 for the keyword "baby gifts for boys". When a searcher finds your listing and clicks over to your page, Google tracks how long they stay there. Do they leave within seconds by hitting the back button? (also called a "bounce rate" ) Or do they spend two to three minutes looking at all your baby boy gifts?

If your bounce rate is high and visitors don’t stay long, Google will assume that the visitor didn’t find what they were looking for, and then lower your positioning for that keyword . And, the opposite is true too!

I recently enjoyed the lecture “Search and Society” from Berkly’s online lecture series by Marti Hearst. It is comforting to know that even the big companies are as terrified of search as DIY webmasters are. Search is an incredibly valuable tool. It isn’t surprising that a ‘real world’ advertising agency became the biggest online advertising company, Google. The power of search lies in the fact that it is ‘possible’ to track data. This is the basis of Web 3.0’s data mining-toolbars and PC based widgets.

The next generation of search and page rank will give the user the power they tried to usurp under Web 2.0. In Web 3.0, everything done will be recorded, in theory. Complete article on The Power of the Search Engine Search Tools

Local Search Results

You can see the first 3 results are paid listings and then Google shows the Local results. Local results are the new #1 position! The original #1 organic listing is below the fold and was pushed down there by 10 new businesses that sit next to a map image, which we know draws the eye to the listings.
