Will WEB 3.0 Grow or Fade?

W3CThis topic has been debated for a couple years. Most webmasters still do not understand exactly what Web 3.0 is. I chatted with Mark Whitbeck, a new breed of webmaster who is blending SEO and web design.

Some current applications include FOAF, Friend of a Friend scripts. These are user generated, and describe a person, so that other people with the same information. This uses Web Ontology Language (OWL) to create a push-technology.

“Most websites today use pull technology. They wait for a request and the server responds when a request is received. Services that use push technology today are instant messaging/chat, peer-to-peer file sharing, online gaming, etc. They “push” the information out based on stored user preferences. It doesn’t wait for future requests once the preferences are filled out. If the criteria is met, it sends the information out all on its own.” Mark Whitbeck.

Do you see any way that we could use it in our firm?

“Honestly, I think it’s taken so long to adopt because it could be viewed as a form of spam. Look what has happened when advertisers started using pop-up and pop-under advertising. Now pop-up blockers are incorporated into browsers themselves. Used wisely, it could be a good resource for business and data exchange. Search also might be used less, since you’re essentially hanging a sign out to the world like a WANTED ads. Searches would automatically come to you instead.

But, like I said earlier, it opens the door to abuse. Oh, and on the search issue, I don’t think Google or the other search engines would be to happy about that. I’m sure they probably have something to do with slow adoption of the technology. After all, there’s a lot of money at stake for the Big G.

Do you see web 3.0 as ‘artificial intelligence’

“Absolutely. Same thing as “semantic web.” Just a matter of semantics. You have the makings of it already with online games like “Second Life.” Employers even recruit employees there!

There are AI scripts that run behind the scenes, but people can still create and customize their own experiences.” Mark Witbeck

This clip from a two-hour chat we had confirms in our mind that Web 3.0 will grow. Whether supported by the search engines, or in open source. The foundation is already here, it will just take time to implement.

A client said to me recently, ‘I don’t need more traffic. I need sales.’ While this shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the SEM process, I understand his point. Yes, he needs traffic. He needs high levels of traffic to rank high on Alexa. He also needs sales.

There are a few ways to help webmasters learn how to increase their sales. One is to buy the SEO software used by the professionals. The second is to use the same techniques they use.

Embed Video We all know that Google can’t "read" or "see" content within videos, so there’s no way to gain search engine rankings from video, Right? Or is there…

Anyone who uses Google Analytics knows that Google measures the "Avg Time on Site" , so when a visitor comes to your page, Google tracks how long the visitor stays on that page. So let’s assume you have a site about "baby gifts". And, you have a page ranked #10 for the keyword "baby gifts for boys". When a searcher finds your listing and clicks over to your page, Google tracks how long they stay there. Do they leave within seconds by hitting the back button? (also called a "bounce rate" ) Or do they spend two to three minutes looking at all your baby boy gifts?

If your bounce rate is high and visitors don’t stay long, Google will assume that the visitor didn’t find what they were looking for, and then lower your positioning for that keyword . And, the opposite is true too!

Keyword Marketing

Keyword marketing is one of the most difficult aspects of web management to master. There are several types of web users. These groups of web users are divided by education level, culture, dialect. A university graduate will not use the same keywords as someone who is new to the web.
