Why is Content on Websites So Important?

This is one aspect of online marketing many companies have not touched and it took me a while as well before the light bulb switched on. Having a few pages about your services and products is fine if that’s all you have, but this also limits the number of keywords you can target for your overall site. Think of it this way, if every content page can make you an extra $1 per day would you have more pages?

Five tips for creating more content

1/ Have unique content - It’s best to write your own content and even better if you know what you’re talking about. There are some webmasters who do not know the products and service they’re selling which is fine, (since they can outsource content writing through companies like rentacoder or elance) but it is much more interesting when you know what you are writing.

2/ Have valuable content - No point just slapping on anything onto a site just because it’s unique. First point of thought should always be your visitors not search engine. Would they even read what you have on your site? Would it actually help them? Ask yourself these questions before posting new content.

3/ Have a well structured site - This isn’t just for search engines, but it’s also easier for your visitors to navigate through the content that you have. If you have a thousand pages, you better have a well organized site, otherwise you’ll have no chance of finding specific articles within your site, let alone your visitors.

4/ Have a well structured page - Always have unique meta tags (title, description, keywords) otherwise search engines might see the new page as duplicate content. Include sub titles with <h2> and <h3> tags. People are always known to just look at titles and leave if its not interesting. You need to engage people with relevant titles.

King Content5/ Relevant Keywords - Now to the search engine part. To me, every page I create with content is like landing a new property in Australia (except not as expensive of course). Do a proper keyword research through overture keywords or other keyword tools like wordtracker (you’ll have to pay for this so just do a quick search through overture). You’ll be surprised by the keywords people search for as well as you have more content. The unique visitors will increase rapidly and of course the longer you have those pages, an age factor kicks in with search engines and its only a matter of time before various pages start appearing at the top of SERPs. Content pages won’t deteriorate like a house on property. This is why they say “content is king”.

Content is Great for Link Building

One strategy I have used for many of my sites with content page is attracting new link exchange partnerships. Besides those who are obsessed with page rank (so annoying), there are others (like myself) who prefer to have minimal outbound links on a page with unique and valuable content. Search engines love it, and obviously visitors would prefer relevant links or referred sites that have more information on the specific topic they are reading about. Seriously, who is going to go through a directory with a list of a million sites unless its Yahoo’s directory…oh but hang on…it has page rank 3 (sorry, just annoyed with those webmasters sending spammy link exchange emails).

What to Avoid While Creating New Content

1/ Duplicate content - If you’re one of those sneaky webmasters who are creating new pages by outsourcing content writing through freelancers, make sure you double check for copied material. There is nothing worst than getting banned from Googles search engine after months of hard work.

2/ Bad outbound Links - Make sure the content page isn’t linking to an irrelevant site or bad neighborhood. Again, it can decrease the pages value in the eyes of search engines and visitors.
